On On, hashers! If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you were on HashSpace back in the day, wandered off to Facebook like everyone else, and just got curious enough to come back and see what the hell is going on here. Welcome back. This is HashSpace v3, and it’s a completely new site starting in 2025. Here’s the short version of how we got here and how to get yourself back in.
A brief (and slightly painful) history of HashSpace
- HashSpace v1 (2008-2015). The glory days. I started HashSpace in 2008 as a private, invite-only social network for hashers, back when Facebook was still mostly for college kids (it’s so old the name is a knockoff of MySpace). It ran on a third-party platform called Ning, and almost 20,000 hashers joined. Groups, photos, videos, chat, drama… we had it all.
- HashSpace v2 (2015-2025). Ning was bought by a company that decided to charge us based on the size of the site. Since you all uploaded A LOT of photos, our bill was going from $60 per month to over $1,000 per month. I like you all, but I don’t like you that much 😄. So I moved HashSpace to new software on a server we controlled, and a lot of the original content didn’t survive the trip. Meanwhile, Facebook ate the world and hash life moved there. v2 limped along with a few steadfast users and a whole lot of empty profiles.
- HashSpace v3 (2025-??). Every time Facebook does something stupid, people email me asking about HashSpace again. In January 2025 I finally did something about it and put up a brand new site with new software. This fall it got a major overhaul: a new look with dark mode, a real Events page, a mobile app and a much simpler way to join (the details are in the October 2026 update).
Wait, where’s my old account?
It didn’t come over, and that was on purpose. The old site had something like 28,000 accounts, and most of them hadn’t been touched in a decade: dead email addresses, half-finished profiles and people who haven’t thought about HashSpace since the Bush administration. I didn’t want to launch a new site full of ghosts, so v3 started fresh. New accounts, new groups, new friends lists, built by people who actually want to be here.
That means you’ll need to create a new account, even if you were on HashSpace from day one. The good news is it takes about two minutes, and you don’t need to bug anyone for an invite.
How to rejoin if you were an old member
HashSpace is still invite-only so it stays hashers only (and you need to be 18 or older). But if you were on an earlier HashSpace, I kept a list of the old email addresses, so you can get an invite yourself:
- Go to the sign-up page.
- Under Had an account on the old HashSpace?, enter the email address you used back then and click Email me an invite.
- Check your inbox (and your spam folder). If that address is on the old member list, a personal invite shows up within a few minutes. It’s good for 30 days and works once.
- Click the link in the invite, pick a username and password, and fill in your Hash Name and Home Hash. You’re signed in straight away. No confirmation email, no waiting for me to approve you.
A few things that trip people up:
- Nothing showed up? The page gives the same message for every address so nobody can use it to snoop on who was a member. If no invite arrives, try any other email addresses you used back then. Your old AOL and Hotmail accounts count.
- Can’t get into that old email anymore? Ask any hasher who’s already on HashSpace to invite you. Members can send invites by link, QR code or email.
- Already joined v3? If you enter an address that already has an account here, you’ll get an email reminding you of your username instead of an invite.
- Never been on HashSpace? Get an invite from a hasher in your kennel. Once you’re in, invite the rest of them.
The Joining HashSpace help page walks through all of this step by step.
What about my old stuff?
Most of it is gone, but I was able to save some of the photos. I rescued about 400,000 photos from the 2010-2015 Ning days and sorted them back to their owners. If you uploaded any, request them here and you’ll get a private download link by email.
Keeping it alive
HashSpace isn’t free to run. Between the server, software licenses and the app, it costs real money every year, and I’d like it to pay for itself instead of coming out of my beer fund. If you get some use out of it, please consider chipping in. And same rule as always: act like adults. We’re here to drink, run (sometimes) and talk shit, not to stalk and threaten each other.
If something doesn’t work or you have questions, post in the Activity Stream or email admin@hashspace.com. Now go find your kennel’s group and start posting trail pics.
